A local lady played Betsy Ross and cut yummy cake for visitors to the Berrien Springs, Michigan American Legion’s July 4 educational activities during the America-250 celebration.

Also at the Berrien Springs, Mich. American Legion July 4, Kris Rich of Project Appleseed, an activity of the Revolutionary War Veterans Association that teaches “the Rifleman Legacy,” demonstrated the workings of an exact replica of the common gun that British soldiers used against the Colonists in the Revolutionary War—bayonet and all. Since these muskets were inaccurate, British Redcoats by the hundreds would fire them at once on command, to deliver a wall of lead, as Rich explained. The Colonists fought back with more accurate Pennsylvania guns that could hit their targets at greater distances.
