FOWLERVILLE — For Fowlerville High School wrestler Layne O’Neil, years of dedication to the sport culminated in a championship moment on the biggest stage.
The Fowlerville senior captured the State Championship at Ford Field on Saturday, March 7, defeating Harlen Begg of Marshall High School in the 285-pound weight class with a narrow 3–2 decision in the finals.
The victory marked a defining moment for O’Neil, who has been involved in wrestling since early childhood.
“My mom put me in when I was five,” he said.

Now competing in the heavyweight division, O’Neil says the intensity of wrestling and the personal challenge of competing one-on-one is what has kept him committed to the sport.
“Knowing that you can beat someone up,” he said with a laugh when asked what he enjoys most about wrestling.
Like many wrestlers, O’Neil draws inspiration from some of the sport’s greatest competitors. His favorite wrestler is Adam Coon, the former University of Michigan standout and international competitor. When asked who he believes is the greatest wrestler of all time, O’Neil points to legendary Russian heavyweight Aleksandr Karelin, widely considered one of the most dominant athletes in wrestling history.
One of O’Neil’s favorite memories with the Fowlerville wrestling program came during the state tournament when an unexpected situation brought the team even closer together.
“When the power went out during team states, we stayed at a military barracks,” O’Neil recalled.

O’Neil credits much of his development to the support and leadership of his coach.
“My Coach Dan Coon has helped me become the wrestler I am today,” he said.
For O’Neil, being part of the team has meant more than just competition on the mat.
“Being close with the team,” he said, describing what he enjoys most about wrestling at Fowlerville.
Before stepping into competition, O’Neil focuses on preparation with his training partner.
“I pummel with my partner,” he said.
Looking ahead, O’Neil has his sights set on continuing to compete at a high level. One of his biggest goals is to place at the Fargo national tournament, one of the premier events for elite high school wrestlers.
In the classroom, O’Neil says his favorite subject is history, and his dream school is Penn State University, home to one of the nation’s most dominant collegiate wrestling programs.
Outside the wrestling room, he enjoys simple favorites such as pizza and listening to the rock band Alice in Chains.
O’Neil also encourages others to give wrestling a try.
“Yes,” he said. “It shows you a lot of what your body is capable of.”
With a state championship title to close out his high school career, Layne O’Neil leaves Fowlerville wrestling with a legacy of hard work, determination and success on the mat.
