Lansing School District Announces Jessica Benavides as Interim Superintendent

Jessica Benavides

LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing School District today announced that Jessica Benavides will assume the role of Superintendent on an interim basis, effective February 1, 2026.

The announcement follows action taken by the Lansing School District Board of Education during its December meetings. At its December 11 meeting, the Board agreed to enter into contract negotiations with a potential candidate. Subsequently, during its December 18 meeting, the Board of Education approved a new contract for Ms. Benavides, formalizing her appointment to the interim role.

Ms. Benavides brings extensive experience in public education leadership and a deep understanding of the Lansing School District. She has served the district in senior administrative roles, most recently as First Deputy Superintendent, where her work has focused on instructional improvement, organizational stability, and student-centered decision-making. Throughout her career, Ms. Benavides has demonstrated a strong commitment to equity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Her professional background includes district-level leadership experience overseeing academic programs, operations, and staff development. Ms. Benavides holds advanced credentials in educational leadership and has built a reputation as a steady, thoughtful leader dedicated to supporting students, families, educators, and the broader community.

“The opportunity to serve the Lansing School District as Superintendent is an honor,” said Benavides. “I look forward to leading alongside our staff and families to ensure the positive momentum across the district continues and that our students remain at the center of every decision we make.”

Board of Education President Robin Moore expressed confidence in the interim appointment. “We are pleased that Ms. Benavides is stepping in to lead the Lansing School District. Her experience, commitment to our community, and steady leadership will help ensure continuity for our students, staff, and families. The Board of Education will announce next steps for identifying a permanent superintendent when appropriate.”

Benavides will continue to serve the Lansing School District as First Deputy Superintendent until she assumes her new role.

Current Superintendent Ben Shuldiner’s last day with the district is January 31, 2026, at which time he will assume a similar role with Seattle Public Schools in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Shuldiner has been a strong advocate for Lansing students and staff, and his leadership has created a surge of positive momentum that will be felt for years to come. The Board of Education is grateful for his contributions and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.
