Lansing New Wire had a chance to catch up with Isabela, East Lansing High’s female wrestler in the 140 pound division. Here is what she had to say about her wrestling experience in Meet the Lady Trojans Q&A:
Q: Why did you get into wrestling?
A: My cousins had wrestled for a really long time and it was something I wanted to do to strengthen myself for the Marines.
Q: What do you love most about wrestling?
A: Seeing the fruits of my labor when I win or when I see people I brought to the team win. I love knowing that all that hard work mattered in the end.
Q: Who is your favorite wrestler?
A: Yui Susaki.
Q: Who is the greatest wrestler of all time?
A: leksandr Karelin.
Q: What is your best memory on the wrestling team?
A: Taking 5th at my first invitational. Didn’t win a medal or anything, but it was the first time I ever placed and knowing that a rookie like me was able to fight hard and make something out of nothing was great.
Q: Who has helped you become the wrestler you are today?
A: Coach T. She’s been in my corner every match of mine and she’s been an inspiration and taught me so much about the sport.
Q: Do you recommend wrestling to others, why or why not?
A: I’d say yes, but only if you’re willing to work through all the tough times. If you aren’t used to hard things or can’t make a commitment to your team don’t bother, but if you want to work, it will do so much for you. Physically, you’ll be stronger of course, but mentally you will become tough.
Q: What do you like most about being on the wrestling team?
A: Seeing how everyone changes and progresses as the season goes on.
Q: How do you prepare for your next match?
A: I listen to music and remind myself of my game plan.
Q: What is your goal for this wrestling season?
A: Make it out of regionals.
Q: What is one of your goals for after high school?
A: Getting married and having a good job as an athletic trainer as well as making a good career in the Marine Corps reserves.
Q: What is your favorite classroom subject?
A: History, specifically American history.
Q: What is your dream school/university?
A: Grand Valley State University
