Lansing New Wire had a chance to catch up with Gavin Moreno, St. Johns High’s Junior wrestler in the 215-pound division. Some of you may know him as, “Maui”. Here is what he had to say about his wrestling experience in Meet the Redwings Q&A:
Q: What inspired you to start wrestling?
A: 8th grade football coach told me to.
Q: Who has been your biggest influence in wrestling?
A: Ryan Dimmick
Q: What do you love most about wrestling?
A: I like being with my friends at practice.
Q: What does a typical week of training look like for you?
A: Go to wrestling practice and lift afterwords.
Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in wrestling?
A: Going all day at long tournaments.
Q: Can you describe your first match? How did you feel?
A: I was very nervous, and I tripped and got pinned.
Q: What has been your proudest moment in wrestling so far?
A: Winning this tourney.
Q: How does it feel to be back with the team this season, what are your individual and team expectations?
A: I miss the seniors, but I’m happy to be back. I expect to do good and hopefully make it to States, and I hope the team does good in regionals.
Q: How has being a student-athlete helped you grow as a person?
A: Helped make me more disciplined to split up my time efficiently.
Q: What advice would you give to others who want to start wrestling?
A: Do it, it’s worth it.
Q: What’s your signature wrestling move, and does it have a cool name?
A: My signature move is a turk.
Q: What is your dream school/university?
A: Oregon or Michigan.
Q: What is your favorite place to go eat?
A: Brody Hall.
