Plan Passes Brownfield Board, To Be Considered By City Council
LANSING, MI – The Lansing Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (LBRA) has approved the brownfield plan for Capitol Walk Apartments, a proposed 124-unit workforce housing development on Chestnut St. in downtown Lansing. The request will now go before Lansing City Council for consideration.
“Housing is critical for Lansing’s future and projects like Capitol Walk Apartments are proof that our city is a destination for growth, providing more proof that Lansing’s time is now,” said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor. “By transforming an underused downtown parking lot into high-quality workforce housing, we are ensuring that Lansing remains an affordable and vibrant place to live for everyone. I look forward to seeing this project move through the City Council process as we continue our momentum.”
The redevelopment is being led by The Lawton Group, LLC, the developer behind Metro Place Apartments.
“We are excited to move one step closer to making Capitol Walk Apartments a reality,” said Julie Lawton-Essa of The Lawton Group, LLC. “Our goal is to provide modern, accessible housing that supports Lansing’s workforce and contributes to the long-term economic health of the downtown area. We appreciate the LBRA’s support and are eager to present our vision to the City Council.”
“The LBRA is dedicated to supporting projects that breathe new life into our city,” said Shelley Davis Boyd, Chair of the LBRA. “The Capitol Walk Apartments project is a perfect example of how strategic brownfield redevelopment can turn an underutilized parcel into a community asset. We are proud to recommend this plan for final approval by City Council.”
Lansing City Council is expected to consider the plan for approval during its meeting on March 9. If approved, project construction is expected to begin in fall 2026 and conclude in approximately two years.
