Lansing News Wire had a chance to catch up with Ryleigh Ruiz, Dewitt High’s female varsity champion wrestler competing in the 105-pound division. She recently claimed the Girls Regional Blue Division 1 Championship to punch her ticket to the State Competition slated March 1, and 2. Here is what she had to say about her wrestling experience in Meet the Lady PANTHERS Q&A:
Q: Why did you get into wrestling?
A: My parents wanted me to get into a sport so then I wanted to try wrestling.
Q: What do you love most about wrestling?
A: The feeling when I win after overthinking everything before the match.
Q: Who is your favorite wrestler?
A: My older sister Danielle.
Q: What is your best memory on the wrestling team?
A: Going to State with my wrestling partners Elliana and Jamie whom I’ve been wrestling with since starting.
Q: Who has helped you become the wrestler you are today?
A: My parents and sister always let me know it’s a match that does not define me and to try my hardest.
Q: Do you recommend wrestling to others, why or why not?
A: Yes, it gives you memories and relationships with people that you will remember forever.
Q: What do you like most about being on the wrestling team?
A: How close you can get with them.
Q: How do you prepare for your next match?
A: Jump around and get pep talks with my coach to calm me down from my nerves.
Q: What is your goal for this wrestling season?
A: Place at State.
Q: What is one of your goals for after high school?
A: Go to college for wrestling.
Q: What is your favorite classroom subject?
A: Math
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Any pasta.

A: Country music.
