Lansing New Wire had a chance to catch up with Nicolas Burch, Waverly High’s Senior wrestler in the 190 pound weight division. Here is what he had to say about his wrestling experience in Meet the Warriors Q&A:

Q: What inspired you to start wrestling?

A: I was unhappy with how I looked, so I wanted to get fit.

Q: Who has been your biggest influence in wrestling?

A: COACH JON DANIELS, I miss having him at Waverly with us.

Q: What do you love most about wrestling?

A: It teaches me how to work hard, be humble, it’s a good way of life and I love wrestling my friends.

Q: What does a typical week of training look like for you?

A: Lots of cardio, good amount of technique practice and pushing myself and encouraging others.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in wrestling?

A: Sometimes staying motivated, and being disciplined. It’s hard to always keep a positive mindset but I remind myself why I started and know that I am needed on this team.

Q: Can you describe your first match? How did you feel?

A: Ooooh man! I remember feeling an equal amount of excitement and fear! It was an adrenaline rush I’ve never experienced before.

Q: What has been your proudest moment in wrestling so far?

A: When I was a JV wrestler, I was bumped up to Varsity without a lot of notice, I was down in points but came back with the win by pinning my opponent.

Q: How does it feel to be back with the team this season, what are your individual and team expectations?

A: It feels awesome to be with my team. My individual expectation would be to try my hardest, fight until the end and make myself and my parents proud. My team expectation would be to win districts and end the season with a great record.

Q: What’s your coach’s name and share one piece of advice from your coach that has stuck with you?

A: Coach Chris Tyler, he encourages each of us to get at least 1% better each day.

Q: What’s your signature wrestling move, and does it have a cool name?

A: Super Duck Under; it’s where I have his tricep, open him up, shoot and go for the legs.

Q: If wrestling had walkout music like boxing or MMA, what would your theme song be?

A: Swerve City by Deftones
